herbs and such

what are you doing this weekend? we are getting up bright and early tomorrow, running by starbucks and then heading to the herb sale. so excited. i look forward to this 2 day event all year. i think i am going to do my herbs in giant pots this year instead of a garden. on my list to get tomorrow: basil (a few varieties), rosemary, lemon thyme, mint (will be in its own pot), patchouli and maybe some dill. i am also going to look for lettuce. if you haven't planted your own before, you are missing out. so fun to pull some leaves, wash them and make a simple salad with a homemade dressing. and herbs are pretty to decorate with as well. i have a few sprigs of rosemary in our guest bath right now.

stop by the herb sale if you are in rome. it benefits chieftains museum which is a vital part of rome's history. bring your wagon and see you there!

Annual Herb and Plant Sale
April 9-10

The Chieftains Herb and Plant Sale has marked the arrival of spring in Rome for over 25 years. Eagerly anticipated by discriminating area gardeners, the sale will be held this year on Saturday, April 9th and Sunday, April 10th at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds, rain or shine.

Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3p.m. on Sunday. Come early for the best selection!

As always, Marion Shaw and Nancy Knight will head up a dedicated group of volunteers who help to make the sale a big success each year. A huge variety of plants and herbs will be available. There will be more than 5,000 herbs alone, not to mention hundreds of perennials and annuals.

Vegetables were such a big hit last year that there will be three times the number this year. In addition to lots of traditional garden vegetables, many of which are organic, heirloom varieties, there will also be a selection of vegetables that have been grown specifically for container gardening, including eggplant, peppers and red and yellow tomatoes.

Fruit trees (apples, meyer lemons and patio peaches) will be available as well as grapes, muscadines, scuppernongs and several different kinds of berries. There will also be lots of hydrangeas, plenty of perennials, new annuals and wonderful old-fashioned shrubs. There’s literally something for everyone, no matter what kind of gardener.

The herbs and plants are selected by Marion and Nancy based on interest and suitability for the area and come from several well-known regional nurseries. All plants are healthy and fresh—they’re delivered the day before the sale. Knowledgeable volunteers and Master Gardeners will be on hand to help you select the right herbs and plants for your garden.

Beautiful containers will also be sold. Nan Henson, Frances Davis and a team of talented museum members will be on-site to design and plant the container of your choice.

Prices are competitive and all proceeds benefit Chieftains Musuem—a great incentive to come and buy lots. So mark your calendar for April 9th and 10th and come to the Chieftains Herb Sale!
