set the world on fire...

the highs and lows of this past week are more than i can write about. when i say we have been on a roller coaster ride, that doesn't do it justice. but somehow in the midst of it all, there was a peace. here is a brief re-cap and the culminating revelation that i had while watching the royal wedding...

high: we listed our house last Tuesday evening with a pipe dream of selling and buying a dream house in downtown rome built in 1910. the first people that looked at our house 6 days later, made an offer we couldn't refuse.

low: filling out all the paperwork and signing on too many dotted lines...stress.

high: stellar inspection report on new house.

low: tornados devastating rome later that night.

high: hanging out in the closet with wil, em, pb, the cat and the fish for 2 hours. it was scary but we made the most of it.

low: no power for 2 days at school.

high: taking em to get photos for the deb ball. she and her friends are the ribbon bearers. she has been with most of these girls since they were babies. no words for this.

high: getting up with em at 4:00a.m. on friday morning to watch the royal wedding. she was so excited. i made coffee, she cut the strawberries and we baked cinnamon muffins. one of my childhood best friends that was equally as fierce of a diana fan as me, came over and brought scones. we sat in our pjs in the dark and watched the whole thing. just like i did 30 years ago.

so while watching and listening to the commentary and all the guessing over what the dress would look like, who designed it, how she would wear her hair, what her sister's dress would look like, etc., i got so nostalgic. i lovvvvved princess diana. what would she have thought about kate, the wedding, her baby boy getting married? we waited with anticipation as she exited the goring hotel for a glimpse of the dress just like the rest of the world. emily thought she was beautiful. we watched as she waved with such poise and smiled just like a princess. we watched her arrival and her sister (in the more stunning dress) assist her with her train as she prepared to walk down the aisle. her final footsteps as a common girl. when the commentators finally hushed and the music started, i was surprisingly engulfed in the realness of the moment. i wasn't expecting this. maybe it was early enough for my mind and heart to be open. somehow, things were coming in crystal clear. i hoped em was absorbing some of it too.

i was watching and thinking about all the hype and all the speculation that has gone on for months leading up to this ceremony. yes, they are celebrities of sorts, but they are still people. and this is still a marriage. an oath. a spiritual thing. i don't know why the significance of that was resonating so loud with me. just watching these two people, joining their lives, knowing how hard marriage can be, knowing how completely precious it is...somehow the seriousness of it all was overshadowing the hype i had been feeling for months.

the thing that struck me the most was a quote that one of the ministers said from st. catherine of siena. "be who god meant you to be and you will set the world on fire." i was almost breathless when i heard that. i tried to repeat it in my head over and over again so as not to lose it. i looked over at em all wide-eyed and buried in the blanket and prayed that she would get that. i thought about it all day. if both of my children could grasp that thought, they will be ok in life. be who you are meant to be. be authentic. don't try to be anybody else or live up to anyone else's expectations. i'm trying not to let go of that moment.

happy anniversary

we started this blog one year ago. i meant to do an anniversary edition but the date slipped by me. our first post is here:

http://photoboyandpaintergirl.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

so over 10,000 views and so many appreciated comments later, we are celebrating our one year blog anniversary. our very first post was on palm sunday and we enjoyed breakfast for dinner that night. we continued the tradition yesterday with our 2nd annual palm sunday breakfast for dinner. delicious. bacon, eggs, cinnamon almond waffles and hot syrup.

this blog has been such a great thing for us. when i read back through our archives, i realize how precious our life is and how much i have to be thankful for every day. and how i was tricked into doing the whole thing. i can recall what was going on with me personally just by the tone of the writing. i can read about the seasons of this past year and remember exactly what we were all doing. it is priceless. i still haven't figured out the best way to preserve this for wil and em but i think they will want it one day. every once in a while, they will sit down and catch up on the latest postings (em more than wil). i don't think they have been too embarrassed yet.

the painting was one i did for the first small art show i had at home. another great and pivotal time in my life that i love to remember.

backhand springs and the killers

3 little things from yesterday:

1. family dinner last night with the patio doors open and some hilarious conversation.

2. em nailing her back handspring. it was like winning the lottery for her.

3. riding with wil driving last night and blasting some music with the windows down.

happy friday!

5 things on a monday

a few things i am loving today:

1. domino the book of decorating. i was devastated when domino magazine stopped publishing in 2009. i lovvvved every issue and saved all of mine. i am probably one of the last domino lovers on the planet to purchase the book. i got it today.

2. the dogwoods blooming in downtown rome. they are lining the streets like a canopy.

3. vitamin c oil.

4. the song infinite arms by band of horses.

5. the photo above. what a great idea for a dressing room/closet.

herbs and such

what are you doing this weekend? we are getting up bright and early tomorrow, running by starbucks and then heading to the herb sale. so excited. i look forward to this 2 day event all year. i think i am going to do my herbs in giant pots this year instead of a garden. on my list to get tomorrow: basil (a few varieties), rosemary, lemon thyme, mint (will be in its own pot), patchouli and maybe some dill. i am also going to look for lettuce. if you haven't planted your own before, you are missing out. so fun to pull some leaves, wash them and make a simple salad with a homemade dressing. and herbs are pretty to decorate with as well. i have a few sprigs of rosemary in our guest bath right now.

stop by the herb sale if you are in rome. it benefits chieftains museum which is a vital part of rome's history. bring your wagon and see you there!

Annual Herb and Plant Sale
April 9-10

The Chieftains Herb and Plant Sale has marked the arrival of spring in Rome for over 25 years. Eagerly anticipated by discriminating area gardeners, the sale will be held this year on Saturday, April 9th and Sunday, April 10th at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds, rain or shine.

Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3p.m. on Sunday. Come early for the best selection!

As always, Marion Shaw and Nancy Knight will head up a dedicated group of volunteers who help to make the sale a big success each year. A huge variety of plants and herbs will be available. There will be more than 5,000 herbs alone, not to mention hundreds of perennials and annuals.

Vegetables were such a big hit last year that there will be three times the number this year. In addition to lots of traditional garden vegetables, many of which are organic, heirloom varieties, there will also be a selection of vegetables that have been grown specifically for container gardening, including eggplant, peppers and red and yellow tomatoes.

Fruit trees (apples, meyer lemons and patio peaches) will be available as well as grapes, muscadines, scuppernongs and several different kinds of berries. There will also be lots of hydrangeas, plenty of perennials, new annuals and wonderful old-fashioned shrubs. There’s literally something for everyone, no matter what kind of gardener.

The herbs and plants are selected by Marion and Nancy based on interest and suitability for the area and come from several well-known regional nurseries. All plants are healthy and fresh—they’re delivered the day before the sale. Knowledgeable volunteers and Master Gardeners will be on hand to help you select the right herbs and plants for your garden.

Beautiful containers will also be sold. Nan Henson, Frances Davis and a team of talented museum members will be on-site to design and plant the container of your choice.

Prices are competitive and all proceeds benefit Chieftains Musuem—a great incentive to come and buy lots. So mark your calendar for April 9th and 10th and come to the Chieftains Herb Sale!

thank you

i saw india hicks on the cover of this magazine yesterday and was struck by the title on the left..."mother guilt: why we'll never be good enough."

i got up at 4:00 a.m. this morning to take wil to school for a spring band trip. he had to be there at 5:00 so we left the house at 4:45, ran by kroger to get snacks for the road, then grabbed a biscuit for him. we were doing great on time until we got stopped by a train for 10 minutes. as we sat there patiently waiting, he wolfed down his early breakfast and listened to dave matthews doing a live cover of hey bulldog. i thought this is surreal. i am sitting here on south broad, waiting for a train, listening to this song with my 15 year old son at 5:00 in the morning. at that moment, between bites, he looked over and said "thank you for getting up so early with me". i wouldn't have missed that moment for the world.

mother guilt is a waste of energy.

albarino

we spent part of our spring break in the mountains a few weeks ago. pb and i love to visit asheville when we go. this was a short trip so we only had one afternoon to make a quick run to biltmore village. we walked around, spent ample time in j. crack, and then visited our favorite little restaurant, enoteca, for a quick afternoon treat. pb had an allagash and i discovered a new favorite wine, Morgadio Legado del Conde Albarino 2009. here is a lovely description:

A full-bodied, serious, dry Albariño similar to its sibling Morgadío incorporating wines made from the first pressing in a comparatively softer and more floral style.

critical acclaim:
"Pale yellow. High-pitched citrus fruits and minerals on the nose, with hints of honeysuckle and green apple coming up with air. Spicy and precise on the palate, offering tangy lemon and pink grapefruit qualities and brisk minerality. Dry, incisive, pure wine with a long, mineral-driven finish."

90 Points

it's my new favorite. cheers!

april showers and the perfect boots

we had the most amazing weekend here. the sun was out on saturday and sunday without a cloud in sight. but tonight, a storm is on the way. it has been grey and threatening all day. when the weather is so unpredictable, it is hard to know what to wear. every morning i am faced with the dreaded decision...is it going to rain today? is going to be warm despite the freezing morning temperatures? what do you wear when it isn't quite spring but you are over winter?? and here is my other predicament. i love boots. i would wear them year round if it didn't get so hot in georgia. and even though i love sandals, i hate giving up my boots for spring and summer. so when i saw this photo earlier today, i got sooo excited. i love the idea of these boots with white jeans. the perfect combination for these winter into spring days. i would wear them in the summer too. and what makes them even better? they are leather booties from target.

and here's my new favorite essie color that is also a perfect shade for right now...
chinchilly.
take cover and happy monday evening!
